Should kids know all the sarali varisais?
Yes. If they know all the varsiais with talam, with order in mind, they start becoming very confident. The concept of 3 speeds can be applied on any varisai.
My child cannot sing without looking in the book. How do I teach her to sing without looking at the book?
This doubt is there in most parents' minds. Sangitam is best learnt naturally thorough repeated practice. Thats what is done in class in a daily practise setup. The varisai has to be approached logically and the pattern of the varisai has to be understood. Varisais are not just random collections of svarams, with the exception of a few. The logic will also aid in remembering the order of the varisai. Over and above everything, singing with talam with the notes open and the video played once each day outside class time helps internalising the talam and the varsai and the concept of three speeds. This done over a period of one month will definitely help the student outgrow the book not temporarily but forever. Children below 6 years of age will find it more difficult to assimilate and execute all the above because of their age. But there are precedents even at RamRasayan where the parent diligently sits with the child and reads out to them like they read a story aloud and make them learn comfortably.
